Hyderabad: Police shot dead five men accused of terrorist activists in Telangana on Tuesday when they tried to escape while being brought to Hyderabad, police said.
Policemen opened fire when the accused allegedly tried to snatch a weapon from a police vehicle between Aler and Jangaon, about 80 km from here in an area bordering Warangal and Nalgonda districts.
Viqaruddin Ahmed and his four associates, involved in the killing of two policemen, were killed in the incident that took place around 10 a.m.
Police cordoned off the scene of the offence on the Warangal-Hyderabad highway. The accused were arrested in 2010 after a series of attacks on police in Hyderabad and were being taken to a court.
According to police, Viqaruddin had links with various terror outfits and was involved in several incidents. He had allegedly floated a militant outfit, Tehreek Galba-e-Islam (TGI).
They were shifted to Warangal Central Jail in 2011 after they attacked a prison official in Cherlapally Jail in Hyderabad.
Viquaruddin continued picking up fights with staff in Warangal Jail too. He also fought with policemen escorting him and the other accused to the court.
The incident occurred close on the heels of a gunfight in Nalgonda district on Saturday in which two members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and a policeman were killed.
