New Delhi: With the hashtag, #Yakubhanged, becoming a top trend since Thursday morning following Yakub Memon's execution, a long-standing debate over the death penalty has revived yet again on the social networking sites.
#StopDeathPenalty #DeathPenalty are some of the top trending hashtags on the debates over the death penalty on the social media along with the hashtags like #YakubHanged, #IndiaKaInsaf and #Memon.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has tweeted that he was "saddened" by 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon's execution.
"Saddened by news that our government has hanged a human being. State-sponsored killing diminishes us all by reducing us to murderers too," Tharoor tweeted.
"There is no evidence that death penalty serves as a deterrent, to the contrary in fact. All it does is exact retribution, unworthy of a Government," the Thiruvananthapuram MP added.
He said: "... cold-blooded execution has never prevented a terror attack anywhere."
“1.Afzal Guru 2. Yakub Memon.. How many more waiting in the queue to satisfy the collective conscience of the nation?” asked eminent jurist Markandey Katju, in a Facebook post.
