New Delhi: Former top bureaucrat Anil Baijal is all set to replace Najeeb Jung as the Lt. Governor of Delhi, Home Ministry sources said.

The ministry had earlier in the day sent the file related to his appointment to the President, who is currently in Rashtrapati Nilayam in Secunderabad, Telangana, for his southern sojourn.

Later in a tweet, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj congratulated Baijal.

Baijal's appointment comes a week after Jung suddenly resigned last Thursday, taking everyone by surprise.

A 1969-batch IAS officer, Baijal was in the executive council of the think-tank Vivekananda International Foundation.

In his long career of 37 years, he held several eminent positions including that of Union Home Secretary, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Airlines, Additional Secretary at Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

He also served as Vice Chairman of Delhi Development Authority, Development Commissioner of Goa and Counselor in-charge of Indian Aid Programme in Nepal.

He started off from the Union Territories Cadre and superannuated in 2006 as Secretary of Ministry of Urban Development.

He retired in 2006 as Union Urban Development Secretary.

While in that ministry, he anchored the designing and roll-out of the flagship programme of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) with federal grant equivalent of about Rs 60,000 crore, for improvement of infrastructure and provision of basic services in urban areas of India.

He holds master's degrees in arts from the University of Allahabad and the University of East Anglia.
