Aadhaar cannot be made mandatory for welfare schemes, SC says

New Delhi: Supreme Court here today ordered that Aadhaar card cannot be made mandatory for welfare schemes of government. However, the court said that the government cannot be stopped from making it mandatory for other services. The court said Aadhaar should be made mandatory for opening a bank account.

A seven-judge Bench has to be set up to hear the pleas challenging Aadhaar, but right now it is not possible, the court noted.
