Quota bill passed in Rajya Sabha as well
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Constitution (124 th Amendment) Bill ensuring 10 per cent reservation to the economically weaker sections in the general category.
The Bill has been cleared with 165 votes, amid the Opposition accusing BJP of playing” Politics” as regards the timing of the bill and demanded it be scrutinized by a select committee.
Accusing the government of not taking the Opposition into confidence, Congress leader Anand Sharma said, “There is no consent from the Opposition. The situation is such that there is no dialogue between the Opposition and the government”.
Earlier, the Lok Sabha approved the bill on the last day of the winter session with most of the Opposition parties standing four square behind the bill in principle.
The bill was cleared in the lower house with 323 votes with three members voting against the bill.
Tweeting after the passage of the bill, a jubilant PM Modi said “ glad to see such widespread support for the Bill.The House also witnessed vibratnt debate, where several members expressed their insightful opinions”.
In order to allow the bill be passed, the government extended Rajya Sabha by a day.
