Minister of State for Home Affairs,

New Delhi: In a written reply in Lok Sabha, MoS Home Nityanand Rai on Tuesday said, "Till now, the government has not taken any decision to prepare z National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC) at the national level."

This is seen as an attempt to assuage the feelings of those who oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC seeing them as a combination of legislation to deprive a large section of minority community of their citizenship.   In the same vein, several non-BJP ruled states have expressed opposition to CAA,  and some of them declared they will not implement NRC.

"There have been concerns of many states (on CAA)...we are in touch with many CMs - both of BJP and opposition parties- and are trying to address their fears and explaining the government's position," the minister added.
