The Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu is becoming home to migratory birds flamingos. Over 50,000 flamingoes have already arrived in Muthupettai mangrove area.
IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared a video showing the pink birds flocking at the sanctuary in the Nagapattinam district. She captioned it: "Magical Kodiakkarai/Point Calimere in Tamil Nadu is happy to welcome migratory birds flying in from across oceans. More than 50,000 flamingos have already arrived in Muthupettai mangrove area. Mesmerising indeed #TNForest #pointcalimere Beautiful video by DFO Arivoli."
In the 1.17-minute-long video, a colony of beautiful birds is seen running over a shallow water body. In the end, they take off together. The video has already been watched close to 25K times. Several users praised the video for its beauty and the heartwarming moment. Some also pointed out the significance of migratory birds.
She is the Principal Secretary of Environment Climate Change and Forests with the Government of Tamil Nadu. Sahu shared a similar video last year also and captioned it: "Point Calimere (Kodiakarai) Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu is abuzz with thousands of migratory birds."
Ayub Khan, forest ranger of Vedaranyam, said flamingos are in Tamil Nadu for the breeding season. "There are more migratory birds in and around the sanctuary and expect more in the coming days." However, the unseasonal rain has caused slight discomfort to the birds. Other migratory birds to arrive in the region are spot-billed pelicans, curlew sandpipers, black-winged stilts, lesser sand plovers, common redshanks, little stints, gull-billed terns, brown-headed hulls, and Great knots.
