London: Southampton FC’s forward Shane Long scored faster Premier League goal ever in a 1-1 draw against Watford. It took just 7.69 seconds from kick off for Long to score the goal.
The Republic of Ireland international looted the ball from Watford defender Craig Cathart and chipped over the goalkeeper to create history.
Former Tottenham player Ledley King’s goal of 9.82 seconds held this record for past 19 years. After King's goal, the next fastest strike in Premier League history was scored by legendary striker Alan Shearer after 10.52 seconds for Newcastle against Manchester City in 2003.
But this goal was not enough for Southampton to win the match. Watford’s equalizer came from Andre Gray on 90th minute.
“It’s nice to have a record like that, but it would have been nicer if it was the winning goal,” Long said after the game.
In another fixture, Tottenham Hotspur defeated relegation threatened Brighton and Hove Albion (1-0).
