CWG: Weightlifter Bindyarani lifts Silver; boxer Lovlina in quarters

Birmingham: Weightlifter Bindyarani Devi lifts the fourth medal, a silver, for India on a successful day in Birmingham Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. She lifted a combined weight of 202kg in the Women's 55kg category, IANS reported.
Meanwhile, Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Boroghain made a comfortable win against her New Zealand opponent in the women's light middle-weight (over 66-70 kg and reached the quarterfinals on Saturday. Making a perfect start in the tournament, she is just a win away from the bronze medal.
This was Manipur-based Bindyarani Devi's maiden medal in CWG. She made a leap with a successful attempt of 116 kg in her final turn in clean and jerk, surpassing England's Fraer Morrow and finishing a mere 1kg behind Nigeria's Adijat Adenike Dlarindye, who won gold with a CWG record.
Twenty-two-year-old Bindyarani lifted an 86kg, her best, in the snatch category, but landed behind both of her English and Nigerian opponents, who scored 88kg and 92 kg, respectively. But the Indian made an excellent comeback in clean and jerk and made two great lifts.
She made 110kg in the first attempt in clean and jerk, but the Nigerian failed on the same weight. However, the Adijad lifted the weight in the second attempt and added a kg more to her total.
But Bindyarani failed to lift 114kg and became third after the English lifted 109 kg, totalling 198kg. However, she made her desperate attempt in the third and final chance, lifting 116kg, which totalled 202kg and won the Silver, breaking the Games record.
Earlier on Saturday, Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in women's 49 kg, Sanket Sargar took Silver in men's 55 kg, and Gururaja Poojary bagged a bronze medal in men's 61kg as India started its medal hunt with four medals from the weightlifting arena.
