FIFA president addresses Luis Rubiales' controversial World Cup final kiss incident

Zürich: FIFA President Gianni Infantino has broken his silence on the controversy surrounding Luis Rubiales' kiss on the mouth of Spanish women's football star Jenni Hermoso during the Women's World Cup final presentation ceremony.
Infantino expressed that the incident "should never have happened" and acknowledged that Rubiales' behaviour had marred the celebratory atmosphere of the occasion, reported AFP.
In his Instagram statement, Infantino stated, "The well-deserved celebrations for these magnificent champions were spoiled by what happened after the final whistle. And what continued to happen in the following days. This should never have happened."
FIFA took prompt action in response to the incident, initiating disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales on August 24, just four days after the final match in Sydney. As part of the disciplinary measures, Rubiales was provisionally suspended from all football activities at both national and international levels for 90 days, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Infantino further noted that FIFA's disciplinary bodies have assumed their responsibilities in addressing the situation, and the proceedings will follow their legitimate course. He stressed the need to concentrate efforts on supporting women's football and promoting its values, both on and off the field.
The controversy has also led to implications for Spain's Women's World Cup-winning coach Jorge Vilda. Amid the turmoil surrounding the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) due to Rubiales' actions, over 80 national team players have gone on strike, demanding a change in the federation's leadership. The incident involving Rubiales forcibly kissing midfielder Hermoso ignited this protest.
Jorge Vilda, who initially supported Rubiales' refusal to resign and criticised "false feminism,'' now finds himself potentially facing departure from his coaching role due to the scandal. Reports indicate that the RFEF's regional presidents have convened and agreed on the necessity of Vilda's departure, though Vilda reportedly seeks another role within the federation if he departs his current position.
Interim RFEF President Pedro Rocha commented on the situation, stating, "We can't say that [he has been sacked], we haven't met with Vilda, until next week... Once we have, we will explain the relevant news... first, we have to listen and talk, that's the important thing."
However, Spain's men's coach Luis de la Fuente, who led the team to UEFA Nations League glory, has received support from the federation despite criticism from some quarters for applauding Rubiales' speech. Rocha confirmed de la Fuente's continuation, stating, "Absolutely (staying), he is backed by all the members of the federation. He is a hard worker who is doing wonderfully."
