Apple to allow iPhone repairs with used Apple parts

New Delhi: Apple announced that it will enable customers and independent providers to utilise "used Apple parts in repairs" for select Apple models. The announcement Thursday says that the company is initiating a new process for the mentioned, which is designed to maintain Apple users' privacy, security, and safety by offering them more options to increase product longevity, NDTV reported.

In a statement, Apple said that used genuine parts will have full functionality and security afforded by the original factory calibration, the same as genuine Apple parts.

Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering said that teams across Apple have been innovating on product design and manufacturing for the last two years in order to support repairs with used Apple parts without compromising users' safety, security or privacy.

Teams in Apple have also been working on enabling the reuse of parts, such as biometric sensors used for Face ID or Touch ID, in the last two years.

The company said that starting this fall, the calibration for genuine Apple parts, new or used, will happen on its devices after the part is installed.

Apple also said that it would extend its popular Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts in order to hamper stolen iPhones from being disassembled for parts.

Apple is going to expand Parts and Service History to additionally show whether a part is a new or used genuine Apple part.

The company said that Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools and training to more than 10,000 Independent Repair Providers and Apple Authorised Service Providers in the last five years.
