New Delhi: The micro-blogging platform, Twitter, informed on Saturday that it banned 57,643 accounts in India for promoting child sexual exploitation, non-consensual nudity and allied content between July 26 and August 25, IANS reported.

Earlier, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal had said that Twitter had given incomplete replies to complaints against child pornography, and the commission was not satisfied with them.

On September 20, Maliwal summoned Twitter India Policy Head and Delhi Police on tweets depicting child pornography and rape videos of women and children.

In its monthly report in compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021, Twitter said that it received 1,088 complaints from users in India during the mentioned period through its grievance redressal mechanisms.

It had taken cognizance of the complaints and took action against 41 URLs.

"We processed 76 grievances which were appealing Twitter account suspensions. These were all resolved, and the appropriate responses were sent", it said.

"We overturned none of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation," it added.

In the mentioned period, the platform received 15 requests related to general questions about accounts. It said it "does not tolerate any material that features or promotes child sexual exploitation -- whether in Direct Messages or elsewhere throughout the service", IANS quotes.

Twitter said that most complaints from in India were online abuse and harassment, and hateful conduct, 544 and 502, respectively, in numbers.

Earlier this week, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk expressed his concerns over reports of tweets promoting child pornography on the platform.

Major advertising brands reportedly pulled out from Twitter after their promotion posts appeared alongside child porn tweets.
