Neuralink implanted first brain chip in a human: Elon Musk claims

New York: Elon Musk said the first human who received on Sunday his start-up Neuralink’s implant from the brain-chip is recovering well, The Guardian reported.

The development comes after The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave Neuralink clearance to test its implant on humans last year.

Hinting at success in the ambitious step, Musk reportedly said: ‘Initial results show promising neuron spike detection’.

Spikes occur when cells use ‘electrical and chemical signals’ to distribute information around the brain and in the body, the report said citing the National Institute of Health.

Neuralink was primarily looking forward a trail for its wireless brain-computer interface to assess the functionality of the interface and ‘the safety of the implant and surgical robot’.

The interface is to help people with quadriplegia (paralysis of four limbs) to use thoughts to control devices, the report said citing the company’s website.

Reports said that Neuralink was previously fined for violating US Department of Transportation (DoT) rules pertaining to the movement of hazardous materials.

Inspections at the company’s facilities in Texas and California in February 2023 revealed that Neuralink failed to register as a ‘transporter of hazardous material’ and also found improper packaging of hazardous waste, according to the report.
