Policy violations: Twitter bans 45,589 in India in Oct-Nov

New Delhi: Citing the promotion of child sexual content and non-consensual nudity, the microblogging social media platform Twitter has banned 45,589 accounts in India between October 26 and November 25, IANS reported.

Twitter also removed 3,035 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in the country.

Thus, the Elon Musk-owned platform banned 48,624 accounts in the reporting period in India.

The monthly report, which is released in compliance with India's IT Rules 2021, said that it had received 755 complaints from users in India in the mentioned time period. After the complaints were received through its grievance redressal mechanisms, it took action on 121 of those URLs.

Complaints were posted by individual users with accompanying court orders, too.

Of the total, 681 complaints were about abuse/harassment, 35 IP-related infringements, 20 hateful conduct and 15 privacy infringement.

Twitter added In its report that it also processed 22 grievances which appealed for account suspensions.

"These were all resolved, and the appropriate responses were sent. We overturned none of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation. All accounts remain suspended," The company said.

"We also received 1 request related to general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period."

Under the new IT Rules 2021, big digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users have to publish monthly compliance reports.
