US: The bodies of 46 people believed to be migrants were found in a tractor-trailer in San Antonio on Monday in what appeared to be one of the deadliest human-smuggling incidents in recent U.S. history.

At least 16 others, including children, were taken to local hospitals alive but suffering from heat exhaustion and apparent dehydration.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said a worker nearby heard a cry for help around 5 pm Texas time (8 am AEST) and went to investigate.

"(They) found a trailer with the doors partially open and opened them up to take a look and found a number of deceased individuals inside," McManus said.

Hood said a body was found outside the truck and the remainder were found inside the trailer.

San Antonio Police say the case is now a federal investigation, as three people are taken into custody.

Of the 16 taken to hospitals with heat-related illnesses, 12 were adults and four were children, said Fire Chief Charles Hood.

Firefighters found a body outside the trailer and several inside in the area of 9600 Quintana Road, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said.

The patients were hot to the touch and dehydrated, and no water was found in the trailer, he said.

Photos posted to Twitter by a KSAT reporter showed police vehicles and ambulances surrounding a large truck.

Temperatures in San Antonio, which is about 160 miles (250 km) from the Mexican border, swelled to a high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) on Monday with high humidity.
