New Delhi: French President Emmanuel Macron told a health debate in the suburb of Poitiers about his government's measure to stop unwanted pregnancies in the nation.

Macron reportedly said that free condoms would be made available in pharmacies for 18-25 year olds.

Describing the distribution of condoms a "small revolution for contraception," Macron hoped it would reduce unwanted pregnancies.

Meanwhile, France found in 2020-21 an increase in cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) with reports putting it at 30 percent.

The offer of free condoms to anyone within the prescribed age groups follows the government's offer of free birth control for all women under the age of 25 this year.

French government introduced 'free birth control' measure for women to stop them not taking contraception as they could not afford it, according to the report.

The Guardian reported that France's national health care system reimbursed condoms if they are prescribed by a doctor or widwife.

The scheme is aimed at stopping the spread of Aids and other sexually transmitted infections.
