Fresh convictions will see Suu Kyi's in jail for 26 years

The ousted leader of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi has got an extended jail term after a military court convicted her on two more corruption charges Wednesday.

Suu Kyi, who spent more than two decades in detention for her struggles against the nation's military junta, is allowed to serve two three-year sentences concurrently.

Adding the latest sentences to earlier convictions will leave her with a 26-year total prison term, as per a report by news agency AP.

The 77-year-old leader was detained on Feb. 1, 2021 after the military wrested power from the elected government that she ran.

The charges against her, which she denied, say that she received $550,000 as a bribe from Maung Weik who was convicted several years ago for drug trafficking.

A slew of charges including five corruption cases, breaking covid restrictions, sedition charges and others have already left her with 23 years of imprisonment.

Independent analysts say that she has been convicted on trumped up charges with political motives, in order to discredit her image and legitimate military's capture of power.
