NEW DELHI: Senior diplomat Ruchira Kamboj, a 1987-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer is to succeed TS Tirumurti as India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. On Tuesday Kamboj, who is currently serving as India's envoy to Bhutan was appointed as the Indian ambassador to the UN.

The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said that Kamboj is expected to take up the assignment soon.

Kamboj came out as the all-India women's topper of the 1987 batch, and also topped the foreign service batch that year.

Her diplomatic career began in Paris, France. From 1989-1991, she was appointed as the Third Secretary in the Indian Embassy to France. She then returned to Delhi and from 1991-96 worked as an undersecretary in the Europe West Division of the Ministry of External Affairs.

She served as First Secretary (Economic and Commercial) in Mauritius from 1996-1999 and Head of Chancery at the Indian High Commission in Port Louis.

From July 2017 to March 2019, she served as the high commissioner of India to South Africa, with concurrent accreditation to the Kingdom of Lesotho.

On May 17, 2019, she took charge as Indian envoy to Bhutan.

Kamboj had also served as a Counsellor at India's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York from 2002-2005.
