Damascus: After a lethal missile strike on Syria by Israel on Sunday, the former appealed to the United Nations to take necessary steps to stop the latter from further offensives and hold it accountable, IANS reported.

The Sunday attack falls when an already reeling Syria works on tending to the aftermath of the massive earthquake, which had taken more than 45,000 lives in Syria and Turkey together.

In a statement on Sunday, the Syrian foreign ministry said, "When Syria was trying to heal its wounds, bury its martyrs, and receive condolences, sympathy, and international humanitarian support in the face of the devastating earthquake, the Israelis launched an air aggression targeting civilian-populated neighbourhoods."

So far, Israel has not made any comments on the deadly attack, according to Xinhua news.

The Sunday attack, with missiles launched from the Golan Heights, took the lives of five people, including a soldier, and wounded 15 others. But, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) claimed that at least 15 people were killed in the missile attack. It said that nine of them were Syrians, four soldiers and three military officers.

The statement noted that several residential buildings in Damascus and the city's countryside were damaged.

The missile was learnt to hit the upscale neighbourhood of Kafar Sousah, the historic citadel of Damascus, and the al-Mazraa area.

According to SOHR, the target in Kafar Sousah was an Iranian school. Israel was targeting positions of the Iranian militia and the Lebanese Hezbollah group in the Sayyida Zainab area, along with a military site in the southern Syrian province of Sweida.
