New Delhi: Russia had plans to destabilse Ukraine completely by setting up pro-Russian "people's republics', taking over regional public institutions.

A reveal by SBU, Security Service of Ukraine, confirms Russian plot to hinder arms supplies to the front lines by undermining national unity.

These pockets of power, or what was called "Federal Republic of Ukraine" was planned for Western Ukraine with regions including Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, Lviv, Ternopil, and Chernivtsi regions.

This 'pseudo-formation' could have destabilized Ukrainian Army in the areas that were otherwise off-limits to Russia's regular troops, reports say.

Thus the newly-emerged sham "republic" would deprive the Armed Forces of Ukraine of support and maintenance from the rear.

The SBU has nabbed the organiser and key figures of the Russian-led network in the region.

The group was to recruit more than 500 traitors as part of the plan, the report said.

The Russian plot wanted to foment public distrust as well as discrediting local security officials.

They had plan to physically eliminate local government officials and top security figures in the region. Afterwards they were to seize administrative offices before declaring ""people's republics".

The SBU seized "manifestos" to the army, security operatives, and civilians with calls to join the group of turncoats, the report say.
