Pyongyang: North Korea has resumed construction on the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone, a project intended to compete with Spain's famous tourist destination, Benidorm.

The coastal complex, envisioned to encompass water parks, hotels, and an airfield, aims to rival the attractions of Benidorm, known for its beaches, towering buildings, and accommodations.

Construction activities have recommenced near Wonsan, a port city, signifying one of Kim Jong-Un's prioritised ventures.

Originally slated for completion by 2018, the construction faced delays due to the pandemic, reported Newsweek. North Korean officials drew inspiration from a visit to Spain's Costa Blanca, particularly impressed by the vibrant tourist destination, prompting the idea of establishing a similar zone within North Korea.

A report from the North Korean newspaper Daily NK revealed that the site, once earmarked for the tourist zone, had previously served as a dwelling place for the country's homeless population, referred to locally as 'kkotjebi.' In February of the current year, the area was reportedly in a dilapidated state, covered in human waste and residue from fires.

Despite these setbacks, Kim Jong-Un envisions an ambitious future for the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone, aiming for potential completion by 2025.

However, the likelihood of international tourists visiting remains uncertain due to existing travel bans and security advisories. North Korea, previously welcoming a considerable number of tourists, primarily from China, has continued to maintain stringent border restrictions, further limiting travel opportunities.

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) underscored the ongoing suspension of passenger routes into and out of North Korea, leading to the temporary closure of the British Embassy in Pyongyang. This situation prevents consular support within North Korea, indicating challenges for foreign travellers considering visits to the country.
