London: Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is looking for a trade deal with India that will benefit the whole of Britain, Reuters reported.

Sunak was addressing officials ahead of the G20 summit in India later this week when he detailed his plans for negotiations.

His spokesperson told reporters that Sunak had said that negotiations for free trade deal with India were progressing.

‘He would only agree an approach which worked for the whole UK,’ his spokesperson reportedly said.

A trade deal with Britain that will make India bigger exporter to the country is crucial for Indian side.

As with Britain, it is all the more important considering its slowing economy after leaving the European Union.

The deal according to Reuters will allow Britain to have wider access for its whisky, premium cars and legal services.

Disagreements surrounding issues like intellectual property rights, rules of origin and an investment treaty are to be worked out.

Meanwhile, campaigners reportedly pressed Britain not to ask for any provisions that could hit India’s generic drugs industry which will make products costly.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman previously said that talks over trade deal with Britain will likely to conclude this year.

‘I won't be wrong in saying a free trade agreement with UK is very close,’Sitharaman was quoted as saying.
