Kyiv: Ukraine's parliament on Monday approved a sanctions package against Iran for sending weapons to Moscow to assist it in the 15-month-long invasion of the eastern European nation. This comes a day after Russia used Iranian shahed drones in the largest UAV attack on its capital Kyiv.

"The resolution synchronises Ukrainian sanctions with the actions of the entire civilised world on the path to the complete isolation of Iran," said the statement on the Ukrainian parliament's website. The sanctions package includes a ban on "military and dual-use goods" with Iran and the "suspension of economic and financial obligations in favour of residents of Iran."

President Zelensky last week appealed directly to Iranians asking: "Why do you want to be accomplices in Russian terror?"

On Sunday, adviser Mykhaylo Podolayk said the capital city was hit by dozens of Shahed drones. He called Iran a "terrorist regime". "Tehran has become a key ally of Moscow in this war, deliberately supplying it with weapons for attacks on civilian cities," he tweeted.

The sanctions package still needs to be signed by Zelensky to become a law but it is a formality as he submitted the bill himself.

Iran responded to the ban by saying Zelensky is trying to gain the West's military and financial support.
