Sadiq Khan has clinched a historic third term as London mayor, comfortably defeating Conservative rival Susan Hall.

The 53-year-old Labour politician, who grew up in a London public housing complex, surpassed his predecessor Boris Johnson to become the longest-serving mayor of the city.

Khan's victory marks a significant milestone in his political career, having risen from humble beginnings to become the first Muslim mayor of a Western capital when initially elected in 2016.

Throughout his tenure, Khan has been a vocal critic of Brexit and successive Conservative prime ministers, including Boris Johnson. He gained international attention for his feud with former US president Donald Trump, particularly over Trump's travel ban on individuals from certain Muslim countries. Despite facing criticism, Khan remained steadfast in his opposition to policies he deemed discriminatory.

However, Khan's leadership has not been without controversy. Issues such as knife crime and his handling of protests have drawn criticism from various quarters. Additionally, his decision to expand the Ultra-Low Emission Zone faced backlash from residents, particularly in outer boroughs, citing increased financial burdens.

Born to Pakistani immigrant parents in London, Khan's upbringing in a diverse and ethnically mixed neighborhood shaped his worldview. He credits his modest background for his success, often highlighting his father's job as a bus driver and his own experiences of facing racism in his youth.

Khan's journey into politics began at a young age when he joined the Labour Party during Margaret Thatcher's tenure as prime minister. He rose through the ranks, serving as a local councillor and later as a member of parliament for Tooting. In parliament, he advocated for causes such as human rights and equality, often facing backlash for his progressive views.

As mayor, Khan has prioritized issues such as affordable housing and transportation. Despite facing challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, he remains committed to serving the people of London.
