US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman condemned China for supporting Russia by amplifying Russian disinformation campaigns against Ukraine. She also warned China of sanctions if it gives material support for Putin's war.

The senior diplomat stated that she had hoped that China will learn the right lesson after seeing what the US has done with Russia in terms of sanctions, export controls, and designations. "It should give them some idea about what the US could do if China were to provide material support." She was speaking at an event hosted by the group Friends of Europe in Brussels, reported Bloomberg.

Ms. Sherman also pledged that the US will help India to end its dependence on Russian weapons and pointed out that China should know that it cannot separate the US from its allies. She said given the impact global sanctions are having on Russia's arms industry, the US will help India to move away from its traditional reliance.

China had recently declared that it is planning to continue to strengthen its strategies ties with Russia. Beijing has dismissed growing concerns over how Moscow's war crimes will impact their relationship.

Ms. Sherman noted that the Chinese military probably does not have a future with Russian weapons even though it was built with the same. The US sanctions have pulled back the military-industrial complex of Russia. The Chinese government opposes the said sanctions on the grounds of sovereignty, but companies have been complying with them.

Both India and China have supported calls for a cease-fire and diplomatic solutions in the Ukraine war, but have stayed away from United Nations' votes for draft resolutions condemning Russia. Earlier this month, Indian representatives disclosed to US President Joe Biden that the country needs Russian weapons to secure the border shared with China.
