According to the Afghan police, a child was killed in a rocket attack northwest of Kabul airport amid the US evacuation. As per Afghan media reports, at least two people have been killed and three injured in the attack. The blast was caused by a rocket that struck a house near the airport and not the airport directly.

Multiple reports have emerged of a loud explosion near Kabul airport. Images on social media show black clouds of smoke emerging above buildings.

The Afghan capital was on high alert for possible terrorist attacks in the wake of a US strike against the Islamic State. Evacuation efforts had begun in Kabul.

The US military commanders had informed that another attack on Afghanistan is highly likely in the next 24-36 hours, informed US President Joe Biden.

The Islamic State has assumed responsibility for the attack outside Kabul airport on Thursday. The attack killed nearly 200, including 13 of the US military.

"The situation on the ground continues to be extremely dangerous, and the threat of terrorist attacks on the airport remains high," Biden said. Military commanders have been directed "to take every possible measure to prioritise force protection".
