Unusual summer in the UK: Train tracks catch fire due to high temperature

The scorching summer in the UK is stirring up trouble as train tracks in London caught fire today. The city has already issued an "extreme high temperature" alert.

A spark set fire to timber beams due to high temperature in the city, reported Express. The incident took place on the track between Wandsworth Road and London Victoria. Railway lines on the route were temporarily blocked and trains were diverted to run from Cannon Street or Blackfriars.

The incident took place around 5 am and the fire was extinguished shortly after 6 am.

Network Rail Southeast explained that the wheel timbers on the bridge are very dry. This must be the reason for catching fire. The organisation added they do not know the exact reason for sure and that it is possible that a stray spark caused the fire.

Managing director of Southeastern Railway, Steve White tweeted an image of the tracks. He thanked the London Fire Brigade for responding quickly to the accident. He wrote: "Thank you to Network Rail Southeast and the London Fire Brigade for responding promptly to a lineside fire this morning and allowing services to safely resume to Victoria".

Network Rail Southeast also shared an image of the incident on Twitter and wrote that heat is going to be a serious challenge this week. The organisation, in a separate post, assured that the line was inspected and cleared fit for operation. It will also be looking into whether the tracks need to be replaced.

The Met Office of the country has issued an extreme weather warning in the country. The temperature has climbed to 34°C. Level three heat-health alerts have been issued in the southern region, midlands, and eastern parts of the country.

Officials have recommended that people stay indoors as much as possible and hydrate themselves.
