New York: Police in the city of Newark, near New York, said the Imam who was shot on Wednesday outside a mosque has died.

However, officials have not yet confirmed the motives behind the murder, according to news agency AFP.

The victim identified as Hassan Sharif was shot multiple times, CNN reported citing officials as saying at an afternoon news conference.

Meanwhile, Lisa Farbstein, a spokeswoman for the United States Transportation Security Administration said ‘Hassan Sharif was a Transportation Security Officer at Newark Liberty International Airport since 2006.’

Lisa Farbstein offered condolence to his grieving ‘family, friends and colleagues.’

Fritz Frage, Newark Public Safety Director, earlier said on Wednesday morning police had responded to ‘a call of a male shot’.

Officers later confirmed that investigation is underway into murder of an imam who was attacked outside a mosque here.

There has been an uptick in Islamophobic and anti-Semitic attacks in the US since the Isreal-Hamas war.
