Washington: US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller welcomed the role India or any other country could play to end the protracted war in Ukraine.

Taking a question from press on whether India or PM Modi could help solve the issue, he said that the US is for India or any country bringing ‘a just and lasting peace that recognizes Ukraine's territorial integrity and Ukraine's sovereignty.’

Miller said Russia made a ‘strategic failure’ by attacking Ukraine alongside suffering loss of military personnel and equipment.

‘The war has been strategic failure for Russia which has seen enormous loss of both military personnel but military equipment. They have seen their standing in the world affected. They have seen their economy crippled by the sanctions and export controls we have imposed,’ Miller said.

The US official welcomed the international support Ukraine received all along since the war started.

PM Modi and President Joe Biden in a joint statement June expressed concern and called for respect for international law, principles of UN charter and territorial integrity and sovereignty, according to the report by ANI.

The joint statement by the two leaders further said: ‘Both countries further pledge to render continuing humanitarian assistance to the people of Ukraine. They called for respect for international law, principles of the UN charter, and territorial integrity and sovereignty. Both countries concurred on the importance of post-conflict reconstruction in Ukraine.’

Prior to this statement, PM Modi assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of India’s support to end the conflict when they met at the G7 summit in Japan in June.

PM Modi talked to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy several times previously to end the war through diplomatic solutions.
