New Delhi: Police in Pakistan rescued a woman from an angry crowd that mistook Arabic prints on her kurta for Quran verses.

A video showed the crowd mobbing her accusing her of blasphemy when she visited a restaurant in Lahore with her husband.

The woman was seen cornered, covering her face with her hands as the people raised slogans, asking her to take off her kurta, NDTV reported.

As the scene was spinning out of control, police were called in and a woman officer Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi was seen bravely taking her away elbowing through the crowd.

Ahead of getting in the restaurant, Naqvi appealed to the crowd not to resort to violence.

‘The woman had gone for shopping with her husband. She had worn a kurta that had some words written on it. When some people saw it they asked her to remove the kurta. There was a confusion,’ Naqvi was quoted as saying.

The woman officer was widely praised for pacifying the mob and rescuing the woman.

Punjab police on social media platform X praised Naqvi and announced that she was recommended for Pakistan’s highest gallantry award Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal (QPM).

Meanwhile, the woman who underwent the nightmare later apologised for hurting religious sentiments.

‘I had no intentions of insulting anyone's religious sentiments. I bought the kurta just because it had good design,’ the woman reportedly said.
