New Delhi: Ousted BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, whose comments on Prophet Mohammed created widespread protest, gets gun license.

Delhi Police has given her the license on the grounds of her request for self-protection, NDTV reported.

The development comes after she complained about receiving threats to her life.

Sharma triggered one of the most raging controversies that India has seen in recent times with responses coming from across the world.

Nupur Sharma was participating a TV debate on May 26 when she called into question the Prophet and Islam.

In the thick of the events, the Supreme Court in July asked her to apologise for "setting the country on fire".

At least two killings were linked to the controversy with the first being Umesh Kolhe, a pharmacist who had backed her, was killed in Maharashtra's Amravati in June.

In a more gruesome incident, a tailor in Udaipur who threw his weight behind Nupur Sharma was hacked to death in his shop.

There were reports of threat with an employee at Ajmeer Dargah allegedly threatening to slit her throat in video. A man in Uttar Pradesh issued threats to behead her.

Subsequently her lawyer told the Supreme Court about "an ever-increasing threat to her safety".

However, the Supreme Court had reportedly said that Nupur Sharma ‘single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country’.
