Twitter Inc's website and app were down for thousands of users on Friday, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.

Affected users reported that they were not able to see tweets, or load replies to tweets that were already in their cache.

The services of the microblogging site was restored after a brief shut down with netizens across the globe reporting outrage.

Twitter posted a tweet citing the issue to be a 'technical bug' that was preventing timelines from loading and Tweets from posting.

"We've fixed a technical bug that was preventing timelines from loading and Tweets from posting. Things should be back to normal now. Sorry for the interruption!" tweeted Twitter support's official account after the services were restored.

Twitter had earlier said it was experiencing an elevated number of application programming interface errors. The API is a set of protocols for building and integrating application software.

Downdetector, which tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform, showed nearly 15,000 user reports of outage.
