Kabul: A NATO-led service member and an Afghan soldier were killed in an exchange of gunfire in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Wednesday.

"An incident in Jalalabad (capital of Nangarhar) today resulted in the death of one Resolute Support service member," the NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) said in a statement.

An Afghan army soldier opened fire at the vehicles of a visiting RS military team in the provincial governor's office building, Xinhua news agency reported.

The incident took place after a meeting between Afghan and RS officials and one Afghan soldier was also wounded in the firing which occurred at around midday.

The RS statement gave neither the nationality of the victim nor the details about the incident under the RS policy, only saying "it is Headquarters Resolute Support policy to defer casualty notification to the relevant national authorities".

The incident is under investigation and further information will be made available as appropriate, according to the statement.

"A visiting NATO-led military officials' team was leaving the compound. An Afghan soldier opened fire at their vehicle. During the exchange of fire the attacker was killed and one Afghan soldier was wounded," a security official who declined to be named told Xinhua.

Several NATO-led troops have been killed in insider attacks when Afghan soldiers or gunmen in their uniform opened fire on coalition troops over the past couple of years.
