Thiruvananthapuram: The 58th State school athletics meet began at the LNCPE, Kariyavattom, here on Monday.

Palakkad district set two new meets records on the first day. Muhammed Afsal of Parali School bagged the gold in the 5000m boys event and M V Varsha, also of Parali school, bagged gold in the 3000m senior girls event.

The second meet record was set in discuss throw in the senior discuss throw event for boys. Sijo Mathew of Mathirapally Govt VHS School set a new record.

Kozhikode's St John's School student K R Athira won the gold in the 3000m race and the silver was won by Kothamangalam Mar Basil School student Anamol Thampi.

More than 2500 athletes are expected to take part in the four-day meet in which competition will be held in sub-junior, junior and senior categories respectively. Competitions will be held in 95 events.

The top three finishers in individual events will be given cash awards of Rs. 750, Rs. 635 and Rs. 500 respectively. Individual champions in each category will each be given a gold medal.

Besides this, cash award of Rs. 5000 will be given to those athletes who break National schools meet record and Rs. 2000 will be given to those who set new meet records during the State school meet.

The champion school will receive a cash award of Rs. 1,10,000 while runner-up will receive a cash award of Rs. 82,500 and third place finisher will get a cash award of Rs. 55,000.

The State schools team for 60th National school athletics meet to be held in Jharkhand will be chosen from this meet.
