Ukraine war: US seeks support of allies to impose sanctions on China

Washington: The United States is considering imposing new sanctions on China if Beijing offers any military support to Russia for its war in Ukraine.

The talks in the preliminary stage suggest that the US is seeking support from wealthy group of G7 countries, Reuters reported.

The details regarding the nature of the sanctions that the US is seeking to impose on China are not yet known.

The report further said that the White House and the U.S. Treasury Department, responsible for imposing sanctions, refused to comment.

Recently the US and its allies claimed that China was considering providing weapons to Russia.

Chinese authorities quickly denied the charges even as the US offered no evidence for its charge.

The US has directly warned China against supporting Russia in the war, especially in the meeting between US President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Biden administration has taken steps to counter China through ‘informal outreach’ between the staff and diplomatic levels including the Treasury Department, according to the report.

President Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will discuss Russia-Ukraine war as they meet at White House on Friday.

Foreign ministers from dozens of countries, including Russia, China and the United States will discuss the war in New Delhi on Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, the West treated with scepticism a 12-point paper issued by China for comprehensive ceasefire.

The US and its allies, alongside Ukraine, believe that as Russian is struggling for munitions Chinese supply could tilt the outcome of the war in favour of Russia.
