Locked Civic body building: Police arrest Congress MP in Punjab

Ludhiana: In a case of locking the main gate of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation building near the clock tower, Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested Congress MP here Ravneet Singh Bittu. The police also arrested former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu and two other Congress leaders, PTI reported.

The alleged gate-locking incident happened during a protest here.

According to police, they have arrested Bittu, Ashu, Congress Ludhiana city president Sanjay Talwar and former city senior deputy mayor Sham Sundar Malhotra.

The arrestees courted arrest at the mini-secretariat here on Tuesday, where Congress workers were also present. They raised a slogan against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party of Punjab.

Police arrested and removed them from the location after a scuffle. They were taken in a van after they were arrested.

A court granted them judicial remand for 14 days after they were produced before it.

The police named the arrested four Congress leaders along with 60 others on the complaint of the municipal corporation under various sections of the IPC, including sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and other relevant provisions of the law.

According to the case, MP Bittu and other Congress leaders had locked the main gate of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation here on February 27. They were protesting alleged widespread corruption in the civic body, along with some other matters.
